The EBRD (www.ebrd.com) is an international financial institution (Triple-A) established in 1991. Its primary objective is to promote transition to the countries of the former Soviet Union. Over the years, it has expanded its operations to cover almost 40 countries, from Central Europe to Central Asia, including Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Jordan, Cyprus, Greece, the West Bank, and Gaza (referred to as the “Region”).
EBRD's mission is to foster open and sustainable market economies in countries committed to democratic principles. It utilizes investment as a tool to advance its mission without displacing the private sector, while also promoting sound banking principles and environmentally and socially sustainable development.
The Bank has a capital base of EUR 34 billion and has a cumulative business volume of EUR 191.2 billion as at the end of 2023. It is the largest single investor in the Region and mobilises significant foreign direct investments beyond its own financing. It offers debt and equity finance, guarantees, leasing facilities, trade finance, and professional development through support programs.
Relation to VC/PE industry
The EBRD is the largest fund investor in the regions it operates in, with new commitments totalling €250-350 million per year. It invests across the entire private markets spectrum of growth, buyout, venture capital, mezzanine, private debt, infrastructure, and energy transition funds.
EBRD aims to foster a robust and competitive private equity market in its regions while having a positive impact in the countries where it works. It has committed EUR 5.8 billion in over 250 private equity funds over 30 years. (https://www.ebrd.com/equity-funds.html).
