Company description

Type of business

International Finance Corporation (IFC) —a sister organization of the World Bank and member of the World Bank Group—is the largest global development institution (Triple-A) focused on the private sector in emerging markets. We work with more than 2,000 businesses in over 100 countries, using our capital, expertise, and influence to create markets and opportunities in different areas of the world. In fiscal year 2018, we delivered more than $23 billion in long-term financing for developing countries, leveraging the power of the private sector to end extreme poverty and boost shared prosperity. IFC in Poland focuses on strengthening local capital market, and promoting expansion of Polish companies to other emerging markets. By supporting climate-friendly energy- and resource- efficient modernizations in corporate and municipal sectors, IFC will mobilize private funds to ensure long-term economic growth in Poland.

Relation to VC/PE industry

IFC has built up a portfolio of investments in emerging market private equity funds representing a commitment of over $6.4 billion in about 320 funds. IFC's experience has shown that there is a strong relationship between fund performance and development impact, and that the quality of the fund manager is the main driver of performance. Consequently, IFC's current investment strategy for funds has a strong focus on experienced teams with a proven good track record. It also seeks managers who add commercial value to the companies in which they invest, rather than just supplying capital. IFC's role typically includes:

  • Acting as a catalyst for mobilizing institutional capital;
  • Supporting experienced fund managers who can implement value-added strategies;
  • Working with fund managers on corporate governance and sustainability at the fund and company levels; and
  • Enhancing the transparency and accessibility of emerging market funds to commercial investors.
